Lisdowney Bord na nOg

The AGM of Lisdowney Bord na nOg NOW took place last Thursday. It was well attended with good input from the floor. Club Officers stay the same, but there are some changes in underage mentors. Larry Maher, Shay Downey, Tom O'Carroll and John Campion will be over the minor squad. The under 15 managers and trainers include Rory Hickey, Aaron Fogarty, Tom McEvoy, Stevie Dunne and Richie McEvoy. The Under 13 management team are Paul Grogan, Brendan Blanchfield, John Banville and Larry Comerford. The Under 11 squad managers and trainers include Kevin Grogan, Brendan Leahy, Gareth Walsh and Ann O'Gorman. Mentors for the Under 9s are Fiona Perry, John McMenamen and Graham O'Shea. The Under 7 age group mentors are John Costello, Eamon Grace, Ger Murphy and Liam Maher.

It is now a legal requirement that all mentors must complete a Child Protection in Sport/Safeguarding workshops and be garda vetted. As it was agreed at the AGM that each mentor should only have a role with one age group, it is essential that as many parents and interested parties, within the club, as possible should do this course so that they can be called on to assist if needed,  The Hurling and Camogie Clubs hope to hold a joint workshop on 1st March so names should be given to any club official.

Thanks was extended to Dorothea Bergin and Ann O'Gorman who do trojan work each year organising club gear. This year it will be possible to order gear online any time of the year directly through the company.

Dates for The Lisdowney Windfarm 7s are 21st and 28th July and 4th August.

Membership is now due. Increases in membership were necessary this year to help fund the ongoing expenses within the club and to balance the cost for families. It still remains great value for money and parents are encouraged to join with the family membership to help keep the club afloat, and help with necessary maintenance and development within the club. Club Lotto tickets can beboughton an annual basis which offers some savings for the individual.

Letter from New Zealand

This letter was sent from the Mullaly family in New Zealand to the local community.

Hi everyone,

I’m struggling a little bit to come to terms with how much everyone is doing for us. Looking at the photos and videos from last weekend, receiving all the mass cards that my mam keeps sending us out, reading messages of support, talking to our families and being told this person called in to see how we are and that person called to see how we are. The lift it gives myself and Joey is indescribable. We tell the doctors and nurses almost daily of the different types of support we are receiving and they are always amazed that people on the other side of the world can make such an impact on our lives.

Chloe is doing really well. She is a remarkably strong child for such a little child. I look at her and what she is going through and doubt I could do it. Yet even though she may be sore and sick she smiles, there are days where she can’t because she is just too sick but as soon as she starts to feel a little better back comes that smile.

She is currently in the recovery stage after round 2 of chemotherapy. Her bloods and immune system are rock bottom so we are waiting for those to rise while we do our best to keep her safe and comfortable. At the end of this cycle she will have tests done to see how effective the treatment is being. At the end of the last cycle Chloe had gone from having a 20% chance of survival to being in remission which was just the best news ever.

While she still has a long road ahead of her she is travelling it really well and will hopefully continue to do so. After this she will have one more round of chemotherapy and then if all is to plan a bone marrow transplant.

Joey mentioned to me yesterday how she felt so lucky and I never thought I would find myself agreeing with her considering the situation we are in but we really are so lucky. Firstly for having this amazing strong girl who brightens up our every day and secondly for having such a group of amazingly supportive people behind us.

We really can not thank you enough and ask you to please keep us in your thoughts and prayers.

Paul, Joey and Chloe Mullaly

Irish Wheelchair Association
The North Kilkenny Branch of the Irish Wheelchair Association are delighted to celebrate 40 years of helping people with disabilities. Back in 1977 a few people saw the need for this service and got together and formed a committee to do something to help. Sadly there is only one surviving member of that committee now. Then down through the years, helpers came on board and kept up the good work.  To-day as a committee, we cater for 21 members in our branch. Things have changed greatly over the years, and there are much better facilities for disabled people now. So to Celebrate the 40th Anniversary of our Branch, we are having a social evening for members and volunteers (Past & Present) in the Springhill Court Hotel, Kilkenny on Sunday the 17th September from 1pm-6pm, commencing with Mass.
If there is anyone out there, that feel that they worked with our Branch over those years, and haven't received an invitation, you would be very welcome to come along on the day, and celebrate it with us. For further details, please contact Margaret or Patricia on 086/0617033 or 087/76997

Sr Patricia Dee, Prague House
It is with deep regret and sadness, that Wednesday the 9th August 2017, saw the passing of founder, friend and inspiration, Sr Patricia Dee.  Who has now gone home to her eternal rest.

Sr Patricia selflessly devoted over four decades not just to the elderly, but to anybody in need in Freshford and the surrounding areas.  Her kindness and compassion was felt by all who knew her.

Her love and concern for her fellow human being was the hallmark of her attitude.  Her faith was her guiding light, her hope was her anchor and her charity was the balm which made Prague House a haven of peace and tranquillity.

Our thoughts and prayers are with Sr Patricia's family, friends and fellow Sisters of the Franciscan Missionary of St Jospeh.

Funeral Mass will be held in Burnley, Manchester on Thursday 17 August at 11am.  A Memorial Mass will be held in St Lachtain's Church, Freshford at 7.30pm.  Refreshments in Prague House afterwards.

Unfortunately due to a number of issues including drainage on the pitch, it is unplayable for prolonged periods of time, limiting the times at which the children can avail of this facility for sport, P.E., training and playing at break times. As the number of pupils has increased in recent years, the school yard can become very congested at break and lunch times limiting the physical activity the children can get.
